The rule of law is a foundational principle of Canadian democracy and the bedrock of any free and fair society. The rule of law includes, but is not limited to, the following principles: everyone must follow the same rules; no one is above the law; the justice system and the courts are independent and impartial; and laws must be publicly knowable and applied equally to everyone, including individuals, businesses, organizations, political leaders, and governments.<\/p>\n

Choose one specific Canadian event, law, court case, government decision, institutional controversy, or issue in your community from the past 2<\/u> years<\/strong> in which the rule of law was challenged, protected, limited, or debated.<\/p>\n

Your essay or video must address all<\/strong> of the following:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The issue:<\/strong> What happened? Explain and describe the situation using at least two primary or contemporaneous sources<\/strong>, such as legislation, court decisions, government documents, parliamentary debates, official records, or original reporting.<\/li>\n
  2. The judgment:<\/strong> Which aspect(s) of the rule of law were at stake? Was the rule of law ultimately strengthened, weakened, or left unresolved? Make an argument rather than simply stating what happened.<\/strong> Identify at least one fact or piece of evidence that could reasonably challenge your conclusion.<\/li>\n
  3. The human dimension:<\/strong> Identify at least one person or group directly affected by the issue<\/strong> and explain how the abstract principle of the rule of law affected their real choices, rights, responsibilities, or circumstances. Finally, explain in your own voice how this particular example shaped how you think about the rule of law in Canada today.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
